AN APPLICATION to build 31 homes on a Mevagissey beauty spot has been submitted.
The development, by Plymouth-based Mevagissey Bay View LLP, includes 21 affordable homes on greenfield land outside the village envelope, accessed from School Hill.
It has been met with strong opposition by local people including parish councillors.
The application, submitted at the end of April, was validated this month and has a determination date of August 14, by which time a decision must be made.
“Everyone with a home in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) will probably have a lot of concrete to look at in the future,” said School Hill resident and Mevagissey Under Concrete (MUC) member, Francis Williams.
“The beautiful views from the coast path will be blighted and this will put visitors off walking this part of the path.”
Others have expressed concerns about flooding from surface water run-off, traffic and building on greenfield land.
In its submissions to Cornwall Council the applicants set out their proposal.
“As the whole of the village of Mevagissey, and most of the coastline of south Cornwall, lies within an AONB, there are no alternative sites that could provide housing in the village, that lie outside of the AONB and would fulfil the criteria of ‘sustainable development’.”
Justin Dodge of CSA Architects, for the development, said: “We have done everything in our power to make this a really attractive development.”
