Bere Alston Co-op plans stalled by planning system bottlenecks
Westcountry Land & Homes
Our plans to secure the long-term future of Bere Alston’s only convenience store remain stuck in planning limbo.
Despite vocal backing from both the Parish Council and the local ward councillor, the proposal was recommended for refusal. We submitted an appeal more than six months ago – only to now be informed that the Inspector originally assigned is no longer available, and the entire process must restart.
This delay is more than just frustrating – it threatens the future of a much-needed service for the village. Without this development, Bere Alston risks losing its only Co-op store.
This situation highlights a broader issue within the planning system. The chronic shortage of Planning Inspectors is causing unnecessary delays for developments across the country – impacting homes, services, and communities that urgently need investment.
We remain committed to delivering this vital scheme and urge the government to address the under-resourcing of the planning system. A more responsive, streamlined process is essential if we want rural areas like Bere Alston to thrive.
